Many people looking for erotic massage will eventually come across Tantra Massage, Tantra Bodywork, and Tantra Practitioners. There is overlap as well as misconceptions, and this article will focus on the difference between erotic massage and tantric massage.

The difference is not always as simple as one being sexual and the other being spiritual. There can be significant overlap between the two, and the label alone may not tell you exactly what a practitioner offers.

The difference between erotic massage and tantra massage

The clearest difference between erotic massage and tantric massage is usually the intention.

Erotic massage is primarily centered around arousal and sexual pleasure. Tantric massage may include arousal and sexual pleasure, but it often has a broader intention related to presence, embodiment, energy, intimacy, awareness, or personal exploration.

Tantric massage is rooted in a broader spiritual philosophy. As a term on its own, Tantra covers a vast number of modalities, philosophies, and practices.

A common misconception is that Tantra is referring to a specific way of having sex or somehow it’s only related to sexual pleasure. The truth is many people hold tantric practices that are solo-based, and might look closer to a meditation or yoga practice.

When referring to a tantric massage, most people will experience a slow, meditative, and aimless experience. However, due to the number of modalities and philosophies that fall under the umbrella of Tantra, it’s important to discuss specifics with the practitioner.

As a practitioner myself, I don’t refer to my sessions as a tantric “massage” because my clients don’t always come to me for the desire to relax and because I don’t hold training or licensing in massage therapy.

The clients that come to me have broader intentions like unblocking themselves from shame, becoming a more confident lover, or expressing certain aspects of themselves. I call it a tantric ritual instead because it takes tantric concepts of attuning and following the energy present, accepting all-that-is as god, and having an experience or co-journey with my clients in depth, love and acceptance.

So I’m less concerned about what body parts I’m touching and more concerned about the energetics of the experience, and sometimes massage is not a necessary component of the energetic shift that’s desired in the session.

The intention can really change an experience with a practitioner and between practitioners. That’s why it is important that you are clear on what you want, express desires clearly, ask specific questions, and find the right practitioner for you.

Where erotic massage and tantric massage overlap

Erotic and tantric massage can look very similar from the outside.

Both experiences may include nudity, sensual touch, arousal, genital touch, body-to-body contact, or orgasm. The difference is often less about which body parts are touched and more about the intention, pacing, presence, and philosophy behind the experience.

A tantric massage can be intensely erotic. An erotic massage can also be conscious, healing, respectful, and emotionally meaningful.

One is not automatically deeper or more evolved than the other. Especially as a tantric practitioner, one of the core beliefs is that everything is holy. This is more of a practice than a law. It’s a practice in noticing in oneself when there is judgement or separation or feeling like something is better than or less than something else.

This belief is why many people in the western culture end up associating taboo subjects with tantra. That’s only because tantra is accepting it all as sacred. But that’s also why devout practitioners can have practices that are not related to sex at all because there’s nothing that cannot be worshipped and adored as holy including the mundane.

Does tantric massage include genital touch?

Sometimes, but not always.

Because Tantra covers such a broad range of practices, two people offering tantric massage may provide completely different experiences.

One practitioner may include full-body touch without touching the genitals. Another may offer lingam or yoni massage. Another may focus more on breathing, meditation, energy, movement, or emotional expression.

This is why it is important to discuss expectations before booking rather than assuming that tantric massage automatically includes genital touch. If you desire genital touch, be upfront, and also specify if internal or prostate massage is desired.

It is also totally okay to say, “I’m curious about this, but I’m not sure if I want it, can we check in during the session?”

As a tantric practitioner, part of the practice is to not differentiate between body parts. We live in a society that has told us that these body parts are for arousal, these are for strangers to touch, and these are wrong to play with. The idea is to break those ideas. Sometimes that means touching a clients wrist in a way that feels different than they have ever experiences and other times it can be touching a genital in a way that’s not arousing or for sexual gratification.

Many practitioners will find trauma or tension stored in the genitals, and the massage becomes a liberation of that energetic block instead of for the stimulation towards ejaculation or orgasm. Yoni’s have a lot more surface area internally, so the tension points can be numerous, and multiple sessions can be encouraged to really begin to move any energetic blockages.

Erotic massage does not always mean mutual touch

Even when a massage is erotic, the touch may remain entirely one-directional.

The practitioner may be clothed, partially clothed, or naked. Body-to-body contact may or may not be included. The client may or may not be allowed to touch the practitioner.

None of these things should be assumed, so please be clear with your practitioner on what’s allowed. Even if a practitioner expresses an openness to mutual touch, they hold the right to change their mind at any point.

Arousal is not consent

Allow the practitioner to lead and guide the experience.

If you have desires or requests, practice verbalizing them.

I always encourage my clients to tell me what they want. I remind them that an expressed desire is not always a request, and definitely not a guarantee. I remind them that I want to celebrate their desires even if I’m not able to fulfill them.

This creates openness, softness, and a judgement-free environment where we can all relax.

Arousal is a natural body response, but it is not consent.

A person can become aroused and still not want a particular type of touch. They can also change their mind, ask to slow down, or pause the experience completely.

Clear boundaries do not take away from intimacy. They often create the structure needed for a safe and profound experience.

Because the terms erotic massage and tantric massage can mean different things to different people, asking direct questions is important.

Questions may include:

  • Is genital touch included?
  • Is internal touch included?
  • Is the practitioner clothed or naked?
  • Is body-to-body contact included?
  • Is the touch one-way?
  • Is the client allowed to touch the practitioner?
  • Is orgasm welcome, discouraged, or simply not the goal?
  • Does the session include breathwork, coaching, ritual, or emotional processing?
  • What happens if I want to pause or change direction?

Final thoughts

Erotic massage and tantric massage are not opposites.

Erotic massage is generally more directly centered around arousal and sexual pleasure. Tantric massage may include those experiences, but usually places them within a broader exploration of presence, intimacy, energy, embodiment, or consciousness.

There is nothing wrong with wanting pleasure simply because it feels good.

The more honest you can be about what you desire, the more the experience is likely to meet those desires.

Stay open minded, and enjoy exploring the pleasures of your own body.
