What is tantra?
Tantra is an ancient philosophy and practice that centres on presence, awareness and connection between body, breath and energy. Rather than aiming for a specific outcome, tantra focuses on slowing down and cultivating sensitivity, using breath, movement and touch to deepen awareness of sensation and connection. In modern contexts, tantra is often explored as a way to reconnect with the body, intimacy and nervous system regulation.
No. Tantra is a broad practice, and massage is just one expression of it. Many tantra experiences are educational or experiential rather than touch-based. These can include workshops or talks on understanding tantra, guided tuition, or practices focused on tantric intimacy such as breathwork, eye gazing, movement and learning how to stay present with another person. Some tantra experiences are entirely clothed and conversational, while others explore embodiment and connection without physical touch at all.
A tantra massage can involve intimate touch, but it is structured very differently from sexual activity. Sessions usually begin with a preparation phase designed to build trust and help the receiver relax into a calm, meditative state. This may include breathwork, guided meditation, eye gazing, gentle movement or ritual, often supported by a carefully prepared environment with music, lighting or scent. The massage itself is slow and full-bodied, with the intention of releasing tension and encouraging deep relaxation. In some tantric lineages, touch may include the genitals, always discussed and agreed in advance. The aim is not stimulation for its own sake, but learning to experience arousal and sensation in a more expansive, embodied way, spreading awareness through the body rather than focusing only on the genitals. Throughout the session, the receiver is guided to stay present with sensation and breath. Some tantra massage experiences may include orgasm, but it is not treated as the goal. The emphasis is on relaxation, awareness and the integration of sexual energy into the whole body, rather than performance or outcome.
Tantric touch is slow, intentional and attentive. Unlike everyday touch, which often happens quickly or without much awareness, tantric touch is guided by breath, pacing and responsiveness. The focus is on how touch is given and received rather than what is being done. Tantric touch encourages both people to stay present, noticing sensation, breath and subtle shifts in the body. It can feel grounding, expansive or meditative, and often creates a sense of being deeply seen and held rather than stimulated.
