Shelby Terrell didn’t arrive at sex and relationship therapy by accident, she grew up Mormon in Utah, spent years healing from purity culture, and navigated opening her own marriage before realising that guiding others through the same terrain was her calling.

Now a licensed therapist specialising in LGBTQIA+ issues, ethical non-monogamy, kink, and religious shame, she also works on film and TV sets as an Intimacy Coordinator, bringing the same commitment to consent and authenticity from the therapy room to the screen.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

Kind, warm, sensual.

Tell us more about yourself and what you do

I am a licensed sex and relationship therapist and preparation and integration coach for psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.

I specialize in LGBTQIA+ issues, non-monogamy/polyamory, kink, and restructuring beliefs around purity culture.

I work with individuals, couples, and people across diverse relationship structures—whether friends, coworkers, families, or romantic partners—navigating challenges such as anxiety, depression, life transitions, shame, judgment, communication struggles, vulnerability, and more.

My approach is rooted in collaboration, compassion, empathy, and curiosity. This fosters a safe and supportive environment to help my patients and clients on their journeys toward growth and connection.

In addition to my therapeutic work, I serve as an Intimacy Coordinator for TV and film, promoting a culture of consent and helping create responsible, authentic depictions of sex in media.

What services do you provide on Sensuali?

I provide individual and couples sex and relationship therapy and coaching.

What turns you on?

Confidence, intelligence, and vulnerability. The combination of those things, paired with humor and a killer smile — I melt.

What was your journey into this world?

I was born and raised in Utah and grew up LDS (Church of Latter Day Saints) — also known as Mormon. I’ve spent the majority of my adulthood healing from the harmful messages instilled in me from this high-demand, high-protocol religion.

Healing from purity culture and finding acceptance of myself as a queer woman has been a lifelong journey.

In addition to that, in my 20s I was with someone for 7 years — during the course of our relationship we got married, and both wanted to explore our queerness. We decided to seek the help of a sex and relationship therapist to help us open up safely and ethically. This is where I did my initial deep dive into all things ENM, poly, and kink.

When one of my younger sisters told me she was gay, I was so excited to have the tools, materials, and experiences to help her navigate the challenges with as much ease as possible. Doing this, I realized my purpose was to help other people in the same way.

Now, I spend my days — either in the therapy room or on set working on a film — helping folks heal from their past, design their future, and live authentically in the present.

What do the first 60 minutes of your day look like?

Every day is a little different depending on whether or not I am training jiu jitsu or strength training in the morning, but usually I like to start slow and get a solid cuddle in with my partner and puppy before welcoming the day. I like to read for 10 minutes, have some coffee, and then dive into whatever adventure awaits.

Why do you do what you do?

The joke in grad school was “research is me-search.” I felt so broken for so long that once I found the tools to help myself and started doing the deep healing work and living my fullest, most authentic life, I couldn’t not help others do the same.

I want everyone to have the best sex and relationships possible, whether they are monogamous, poly, kinky, or vanilla. Pleasure doesn’t discriminate.

What is an unexpected pleasure you discovered in your work?

I learn so much from my patients and clients. Talking about sex, shame, and fantasy can be really scary, but so many people I talk with — especially in my intake calls, which are only about 30 minutes — open up so quickly and are so vulnerable.

I am just so humbled and grateful that they trust me. I can’t promise a safe space (therapy can bring up scary and challenging things), but I do my best to create a brave space. And when people rise to that occasion, the courage they have is remarkable.

What should more people know about your work?

We are all trying to figure out life together. No one has all of the answers. Sex therapy isn’t “sexy.” Sex is integrated into every part of our lives, yet we rarely have the skills to talk about it. I’m here to help you along that path.

What’s your superpower?

I think my kindness is my superpower. I try to move through the world assuming everyone’s goodwill and creating containers of calm amid chaos.

We love vices. What’s yours?

I have an insatiable sweet tooth.

Who are your sensual inspirations?

People who embody sensuality in everyday interactions. A lot of my dance professors, in how they described a movement, you could feel it in your bones. It wasn’t sexualized, but to experience your body in motion while focusing on the temperature of the air and how it touches your skin — that level of presence is magic to me.

Closing thoughts?

Practice small moments of pleasure every day. Step outside and feel the sun on your face. Next time you have your favourite dessert, slow down and cherish every moment. Tell people you love them. Be kind to yourself. Life is short, and we get one per customer.
