My heart and soul have always belonged to many things…My passions range from dance to languages to writing to animals to cold water swimming to music to travelling to reading to watching live shows and movies to keeping active – whether that be in the gym or trying to climb the three highest peaks in the UK in 24 hours. One thing that has been a constant for me is performing – what feels like a love/hate relationship for all my life. My spirit feels awakened when I move, and especially when I move with fire to a song that takes me out of my head and into my body. I love the true unfolding of oneself that the vulnerability of performing allows, and the empowerment of oneself through exploration of expression through performance art. Performing is the one constant that always allows me to indulge freely in authenticity, delving into the unknown, finding answers for the things that belonged to questions I didn't have the vocabulary for.

What is burlesque?
The theatre kid-turned-baddie pipeline.
Burlesque is a form of entertainment that emerged in the 19th century, characterised by a combination of satire, parody, and extravagant performances. It often involves theatrical elements, music, dance, and humour. Burlesque shows typically feature exaggerated and funny takes on serious or dramatic subjects.
What makes it hot?
Burlesque is often considered arousing due to its emphasis on the art of tease, where performers skilfully build anticipation through striptease elements without explicit nudity. The allure lies in the combination of elaborate costumes, glamorous aesthetics, and the playful confidence exhibited by performers on stage. The celebration of individuality, diverse styles, and the overall sensuality expressed through music and choreography contribute to a captivating and entertaining experience that may be perceived as arousing by some audiences.
No, burlesque involves striptease but focuses on artistic expression, humour, and theatrical elements more than the profession of a stripper does.
No, burlesque emphasises the art of tease, and explicit nudity is not always a part of the performance.
No, burlesque welcomes performers of all genders. While historically more associated with female performers, modern burlesque embraces diversity and inclusivity.

Sensuali chatted with Belle Lauralei, the all round sensualist and lover of erotica. We spoke about how supporting men and the masculine is integral to achieving a harmonious society, the struggle of living in a mind-led world that disconnects us from our bodies, and how more women need to view femininity as a power rather than a weakness.

3 things I learned at amateur burlesque night
Tuesday 8 March 2022
This week I tagged along to Amateur Burlesque Night at Brooklyn's iconic House of Yes with a friend. I went in with no expectations and left feeling inspired. Read below for my three biggest takeaways.
DO
Applaud and show appreciation: Burlesque performers put a lot of effort into their acts, so show your appreciation by applauding and cheering.
Respect boundaries: Remember that burlesque is a performance art form, and performers have boundaries. Respect their personal space and the rules of the venue.
Understand the context: Recognise that burlesque is a form of entertainment with a rich history. Understanding its context can enhance your enjoyment of the performance.
Dress appropriately: Some burlesque events may have specific dress codes, so check beforehand and dress accordingly. Many attendees choose to embrace the glamorous and vintage-inspired aesthetic.
DON'T
Be disrespectful: Avoid making inappropriate comments or gestures towards performers. Remember that they are artists providing entertainment, not objects for personal commentary.
Use your phone inappropriately: Refrain from taking photos or videos without permission, as this can violate performers' privacy and the rules of the venue.
Interrupt the performance: Keep conversations to a minimum during performances to avoid disrupting the atmosphere. Save conversations for intermissions or after the show.
Expect explicit content: While burlesque may involve striptease elements, it's essential to recognise that it is more about the art of tease than explicit nudity. Adjust your expectations accordingly.Disregard venue rules: Each venue may have specific rules and guidelines. Follow them to ensure a positive experience for everyone attending the show.
